I found this piece at an early 1800's farm east of Toronto a couple of weeks ago and felt it was worth the effort to try to find out what it might have been! :dontknow: I started by tumbling it for 72 hours and changed the 'cleaning solution' every 12 hours. After that, I glued the two pieces back together using 'Weld-Bond' all-purpose glue, I then gave it a light coat of natural Bees Wax. I've found Bees Wax works well to even out the patina/finish and bring out the original detail on coins and other metals that have been in the ground.

After the piece had been cleaned of corrosion I was finally able to give it a closer inspection under a jewelers loop and discovered, it still has some of its original bronze/gold finish. It also has flowers and vines cast into it! :o

Let me know what you all think,
Dave

That's a beautiful piece. Love all the detail but I don't know what it would be. Thanks for sharing though !

Amazing find I also at first glance said almost looks like a handle for a mirror although wouldn't think the end would be that pointed.would hope even back then they would have rounded it off more beautiful design keep digging and keep posting

I just wanted to say thank you very much to everyone for your interest and you help in identifying this piece as a handle to a hand-held vanity mirror! :hello2: I'm always amazed at the incredible knowledge of history by the members of Treasure Net. This is what makes this site such a valuable asset to the metal detecting community around our world!

Thanks again for this!
