Mystery holed object, sword guard?

Found this odd shaped piece while hunting colonial area. Never seen one of these hoped plates and my friend joked that it's a sword handle plate. I'm stumped.

From a small sword or "court sword". This type of sword was developed in France during the late Renaissance period. The court sword has been adopted by many military forces as a ceremonial weapon, and was used up to WWI.
