Your buddy did quite well! Looks like someone thought about putting a hole in it and failed or changed their mind? Without that, it's near mint state. Congrats to Brett! The copper? I could use a bit more of the dirt cleaned off..

I did suggest he clean the copper a bit more. He is pretty new and scared of overcleaning anything. The copper is extremely thin, I am thinking a token maybe. The profile looks like Lincoln and it is just a bit larger than a nickle. More pics to come if he cleans it more.

the reverse of the copper appears to have the word 'jetton' at the bottom and the man on the front appears to be wearing a couple of medals. I lean towards it being Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, but I can't find a match when searching Prussian jettons.

The mystery coin is a jetton. Looks like the bust is of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I and it's from 1814 according to Numista.

Great ID. The Nuremberg token is probably a commemorative one as Nicolas I ascended the throne only in 1825

Thank you so much for the ID, I will let him know! No telling how that came to be in the spot it was in.
