Thanks Don! I'm willing to try, but I've never done this on any coin. This would be new territory for me. If you have advice on how to proceed, I'd really appreciate it! I'll post "after pics"!
Here's the coin after following the peroxide clean up. 2 hours in hot peroxide, and I think that I'm starting to see some detail, or my imagination is getting better.
I think that I see a bust on one side. I can mostly make out the cranium, but not many details. I can almost convice myself that I see a "1 8" at the bottom of the coin.
On the back, I can't make out anything. I could convince myself that I see a wreath, but that's after looking at the early large cents.
I've left some of the 'faceless disks' in my change pocket for months hoping some detail might show-- they ( if not lost) just get shiny copper 'faceless disks' ------
Everyone has their own techniques for dealing with coins that are in that bad of shape. Some people suggest putting it in a little bit of heavy cream so that is just barely covers the coin, or putting it under paper and scribbling on top with a pencil. My technique is to scrub it with a scotchbrite pad (those rough green pads.) Of course, it destroys the coin, but it's already destroyed as is... it sometimes will shine the bust or large details, giving you something enough to figure out what it is... unfortunately I don't have any before & after pics to show anymore.
I've done the toothpick method for trying to scrape crud off of old coins and it can help bring out some detail without much damage to the coin. Just get a wooden toothpick where you think you see some detail and start rubbing.
