Hey everyone,

I found this coin on my first hunt back in 2010 and sadly have no idea how old it is except that is a big penny. Its pretty eroded but you can see a face on the front, facing to the right and the words one cent on the back. There seems to be something going around the words one cent, could be a wreath? You can definitely make out United States of America on the back too even though it is somewhat eroded. But other than that it was a really neat find and it got me really hooked on the hobby. Any idea what this penny is and what could be? Is there a way i can clean it up with out damaging it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Mr RP113, hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of downloading your pic of the obverse and gave it a high contrast scan. I think the date is 1805 because these fives were oddly designed with a very short vertical line between the lower curve and the horizontal cap. I think you can make out the top of the eight and the lower right curve of the zero, maybe . But the five is the real give away, because of the date span of draped bust cents the only date that ended in five is the 1805.
My humble opinion on this coin's date anyway...here is the edited pic of your coin...(nice find, regardless), Happy hunting.

Thank you very much, I'd never thought of doing that. I can somewhat make out the year but I know what you mean.
