Hey folks....I found this copper or bronze coin just a few feet away from a 1784 half reale. I don't know anything about coppers, and I know this one is a LONG shot....but I was hoping maybe someone has a theory on what this is. It is the same size as the half reale ~ 17mm. Here's a look at both sides (what's left of it!) Any theories as to what it is/was? Thanks.

maybe a Connecticut copper based on the platform towards the bottom of the coin, but then the size is wrong. :dontknow:

Try a pencil rubbing of the coin.

17mm is an odd size for a copper. Looks like it may be a thick button. There is a mark right in the middle where the shank would go.

Thanks Anyway....

I really didn't expect to get a positive ID on this thing. It's too far gone. I was hoping someone knew of a copper that is 17mm.

Neil..I see what you are talking about, but I'm sure it's not a button.

So I guess we actually did get a positive ID.....It's a 17mm copper/bronze slug! Thanks for the input.
