A buddy found this and it is worn pretty smooth. There is what looks like an outline of a head facing right and some faint lettering at the top left of the head. The back is blackened and you can't really see any details. It is a bit larger than a regular dime, it is about the size of a penny. Any ideas?

looks like the top of the head is closer to the edge of his coin, than it is in the two pics you showed. I'm just saying :dontknow: Nice find regardless

spanish 1/2 reale -- differant mints have slightly differant "spacing" of head to rim -- without a doubt its a spanish 1/2 reale -- exactly which ruler you will have to closely inspect it --to figger it out for sure .

Timekiller had the right ID. The date range on these is late 1700s to early 1800s with Carolus IIII.

Cheers,

Thanx all. This is a rare find here in Mich. I have only seen 2 or 3 others found. Hillbilly, I wish you would change your picture, every time I come to Tnet and see a post from you I become hypnotized and forget what I came on to look at :tongue3: I may have to hijack the pic and get it blown up to poster size so I can desensitize myself to it. :laughing7:

I agree with everyone. Carolus IIII = Charles IV. The backside not pictured would have an R designating 1/2 reale. The most obvious is the size. May be 1R. :dontknow: http://metaldetectingworld.com/coins_silver_reales.shtml

Did you measure it? 1/2 REAL or One-Half "Bit" is equivalent to American HALF-DIME or 1/16 PESO DIAMETER: 16.4 mm - 17,7 mm

1 REAL or One "Bit" is equivalent to American DIME or 1/8 PESO, DIAMETER: 20.3 mm - 21.6 mm
