I dug this coin/token (?) up today at the 1804 house I recently started detecting at. I have no idea what the heck it is, and was hoping someone could ID it.
It is a tad bigger than a modern penny, but a bit thinner.
It measures 19.3mm.
I can tell it's old just by the quality of the metal itself.
I took some pictures, but have no idea which way is up on this thing. LOL.
Hopefully someone can figure it out. :icon_scratch: ;D
Thanks,
MM

Re: Mystery Coin or Token??? Any ideas??????????????

Badly damaged Lincoln cent. In photo #4, you can see "Liberty" to the left.

Re: Mystery Coin or Token??? Any ideas??????????????

It looks like a copper coin with clips but copper coins were not cliped :o :o. Usually only silver, and sometimes gold coins were cliped. I think this started with the Chinese. So what I'm trying to say is that you got a messed up copper coin and I don't really know what it is ;D ;D. Tony

I dont believe its a damaged lincoln cent either. But maybe altered. I see the TY from Liberty that Daddytopcat referred to. I have seen this coin/token posted here before here at TN but I cant remember.. Its very familiar. I believe you will get an ID.

Yep, I can see the "TY" now too. Daddytopcat may be right. It measures larger than a Lincoln penny though. Perhaps from the beating it took? :icon_scratch:
What a weird coin. :tongue3:

Does look like Lincoln's profile, or at least part of it. But then again, I see a lot of things that others don't.

I have seen a coin with these markings here before. Maybe it was squeezed with pliers? :icon_scratch:

DTC,
I think you have it. Good eyes!
Maybe a kid took his anger out on it, since he was expecting a nickel allowance? :icon_scratch: :tongue3: :tard: ;D
Thanks Scott,

Not sure what they rolled over this, or damaged it with, or why, but I gotta say it's a Lincoln....

Great ID daddytopcat but Im gonna take it a step further. Could this be knurling on this cent made with a knurling tool or put through a knurling lathe?

Amazing ID

It could also be an early version of a 'hobo penny' ;D
