Your find is not a 1-piece flatbutton… it is actually the back section of a 2-piece hollow brass button. That's what I thought it was, as soon as I examined your photos... but I needed to find some clearly-visible "proof" to convince you. The crucial ID-clue is that a backwards letter N is visible on what you were thinking is a 1-piece brass flatbutton's front. The lettering you see on it, when read correctly, says "Benedict & Coe" -- which is the name of an early-1800s (1829-34) American button-manufacturing company, located in Waterbury CT.
