Update 01-28-07 Mystery button #4

I finally took more pictures of this button. Here are some of the back. No there is no backmark. The shank is very thick and rather unusual. No Idea what this went to. I found it at a cellar hole where I found some 1700's buttons and shoe buckles. This one was only a inch or two deep??

That looks very typical of our 17th century button shanks. But seems to early, so I will guess early 1700s.

Dugfinds, that was fast! It makes sense that the button could be that old based on everything else I found in this area. I have never seen a shank like that before. I find it very interesting for sure. Thanks for looking.

Oh man, that's great. Those pictures look just like the shank on mine. I found a button very similar to the one on the lower left!! I think it is made of lead or pewter. Mine does not have the shank though. I found it on the road I live on out in the woods. I have found others around here made of that same material. I was thinking (hoping) Rev War era as my town had a big presence in the Rev War. Great pictures, thanks I saved the picture for future reference.

I think the broken button is Pewter/tombac and quite common, but its more likely 18/19th century.
