I can only guess a die, but for what I have no idea

mold die looks like... like playdoh style.

Does the tree shape continue through the piece or does it stop.

It stops, its like a cylinder with an end cap, the cap is slightly concaved and the shape is cut into it. The other end is open.

It looks to me like an old cookie maker die. My mom had a bunch of different ones like this. Imagine a grease gun but instead of grease, it has cookie dough. You squeezed the handle and out came cookies shapes like the die you had inserted. This would obviously be for Christmas. The ones she had were aluminum, but they may have made them out of other metals.

Maybe a barrel tap piece for special key use.
