So yesterday, I went back to one of the late 1800's houses that I have been detecting in town. It has a large backyard. It was a real heat wave - 40 degrees.
Most of the areas in the backyard were frozen. I had to literally stand on my shovel, wiggle left to right, back and forth, just to cut one side of a four sided plug.
Needless to say, not only did it put a hurting on this old body, but it cut into my digging time as you can imagine. :crybaby2:
I toughed it out for about 3 hours and did walk away with a few keepers.
My finds were:
*1943 Merc - my first silver coin in this yard so far. :icon_thumleft:
*Circa 1853-1858 Napoleon lll 5- centimes . (Thanks "Underminer" for the ID. )
*Aluminum "Autorized RCA Distributor - It Pays To Say RCA" token.
*Brass Pocket Watch frame. Symbolizing I'm out of time? :tongue3:
*5 Wheat pennies (1919-1954), not in photos.
*Misc pieces: Brass door lock piece, piece of a skeleton key, pottery shards, square nail, round gold gilted what's-it :dontknow:, small clip, metal metal, clad.

Will be headed back next week to finish the yard once the ground thaws out.
Thanks for L@@KING Gang. Happy Friday, and have a great weekend.

The Merc looks really good!!
Thanks Tony. I was happy to see it that’s for sure. The owner said the yard “had been detected” before by a guy that tools some trees down in the yard.
I started to think he had found all the silver coins.

Nice finds MM. I wish it was 40 here I would be out in shorts and a tee shirt. We have almost 20in. of snow on the ground and tonights low is -5 with a wind chill of -25. It's been this way for the past week, can't wait for spring.
I hear ya. My brother is up in the north east corner of Indiana. 24” of snow. I remember those days back in the 60’s and 70’s up there. I delivered pizzas in the late 70’s up there. Hard to get traction in a 73 Firebird with wide rear tires. lol.

Very Cool & Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Great finds - congrats !

As you probably already know ...
When grass and sand areas are to frozen to dig - you can usually still dig fairly easily in the woods.
The decaying leaves really help the ground from freezing up that bad.

ModernMiner you did amazing thanks for sharing with us :)

Nice finds MM. hunting in that weather is a workout for sure. Too cold here. -4 and four inches of frozen ground. Can’t wait for springtime.

Great finds MM. I love finding unusual coins. That 1800's French 5 centimes is fantastic. I give you much credit for overcoming the weather and frozen ground. I went out earlier this week and tried to detect with about 2 inches of snow covering everything....it was both cold and wet! Not much fun. Here's hoping for a warm-up!

Yep. When I lived in the Raleigh area I had access to two properties that kept me busy for about 10 years. They had woods like you mentioned. I remember digging in the snow some days. I dug a lot of CW relics on those properties. Both Union and Confederate.
Thanks for the post.

I hear ya buddy. My brothers lives in LaPorte, Ind about 20 minutes from Lake Michigan. I think they got about 24” of snow yesterday on top of the -0 temps. Too damn cold for me.
Good luck in those fields this year. 👍
