My Very First $100 Box of Nickels

Hello, im new to this coin roll hunting and i decided to go out and buy a box of nickels to search.
Ok so now that ive search the whole box, would you guys help me out and tell me which ones are good to keep or not.
also i think i did a good amount on the 1964 nickels, do you guys think i should keep these or release them back into the wild?

Most of the folks around here toss back Nickels from the 60s and newer. I tend to keep the 60s and 61s, as I have a book that has those years in them and it is nice to upgrade those...only reason.

The whole deal about nickels is, well you keep the older ones because they are old. plain and simple, they are made of the same metals composition as your brand new 2011 nickel, but people like to keep them because the are old. so now we all must determine to ourselves what we consider "old". I went through so many nickels i picked out 55' and under. If you just want VALUABLE nickels.. keep only the war nickels and 30's and under i would say... but i think keeping 60's and under makes us feel good walking away with a roll of nickels after just one box :P

Don't keep 1964 nickels unless you find one in mint condition. They were minted in HUGE numbers (billions) because of the coin shortage caused by the silver hoarding that was going on in the early 60s. If you keep all the '64 nickels you find, you'll be out of money in like a month.

Yup...the first box of nickels I did I saved out everything 1964 and older. When I got to $5 in 1964s I decided to throw them in the dump bag...then I found my old Wittman Jefferson Nickel book....and started saving 1961 and older because that's what the book had in it for holes. The date you pick as your cut-off is up to you...but if you include 1964s you're a little....well....off

I would suggest buy a copy of the red book of coin value (amazon.com). Or you could check out valueincoins.com.

1964 and 1964D are very very large mintages over 2 billion. Those coins are worth 5 cents unless they are in mint condition. Most of the Jefferson nickels are worth 5 cents, unless they are:
War Nickels (35% silver)
Mint Condition, MS 60 and great
Low minatge (1950D was the lowest at 2 1/2 million)

My son and I search nickels to complete our collection of Jeffersons, We are still missing; 1938D, 1938S, 1939D, 1950D, & 1955. In addition we keep only those Jefferson that meet the above criteria.

I get at least ten times as many 1964s as I do 2009s, and I get more 2009s than anyone else I know of.

Although if you look for errors and varieties, there are some worth looking for on those 1964 nickels, like some minor doubled dies, RPMs and the "E PLURIDUS UNUM" variety.

Ive decided to throw back all the 1964 nickels i found, majority of them showed heavily wear anyways.

Also i noticed war nickels were minted from 1942-1945
Yay i got 2 silver nickels, i also gonna keep 1955 and below nickels as they are pretty old, the oldest nickel i got out of the $100 box is a 1939 in ok condition

ill be posting pictures later today of the error die i got as well as the foriegn coin an.war nickels.
