Hey everybody, got today off work, so I decided to grab a couple boxes of nickels today from my bank. I ordered 5 more and they will be here tomorrow.

I am going through "Dub Harris" boxes, and usually find two war nickels in each one, plus one foreign coin. Last week I found my first buffalo, no date.

Box#1
'60-'64: 35
'50s: 13
'40s: 9

'99 Canadian nickel.
Pretty skunky.
starting box#2 for the week right after i finish this post.

Im at 2 skunkies in a row on nickels. Also in your post you counted 60-64. If you count all the 64s YOU WILL GO CRAZY~~••°`´´##***

Yeah I think I just keep them to get them out of circulation. lol

Box #2

'60-'64: 69
'50s: 16
'40s: 8
'30s: 1 (1939)

And, another buffalo! Second one out of around 5 boxes!

Question; I found a 42 nickel without the large mintmark above the dome. Is it silver? I can't do the sound test as I am kind of hard of hearing. I'm reading they didn't start making them silver until some time into '42. Thanks!

Your 1942 nickel is not silver. They made a silver version and regular that year. The large mint mark above montecello is the best way to ID them. HH

If it had a big mark above the dome it is 35% Ag.
They switched in late '42 from cupro/nickle to Ag/Mn/Cu.
No big mint mark for '42=regular composition.

That's what I figured. Thanks guys

Plus three war nicks! 2 1943S, and a '45 D!

Another dumb question. I also found 6 1970 S, 3 69 S, and one '68 S. These ARE proofs, correct?

Also found a 1994 P, but the first 9 in the date is almost nonexistent! Special? I doubt it, but kinda neat. And two canuck nicks.

The early 70's s were not proofs. San Francisco minted circulation coins until 74(think that's when it stopped. Also post a photo of the worn 9 might br a grease error. Also did you know that 1964 is the year they minted the most nickels ever? In the billions

Thanks for the info, yeah it's pretty obvious that they minted a crapload of nickels in 64. I'll try to get a pic of the possible error after this next box.

FOUR war nicks in this box! 2 '43 S, a '43 P, and a '45 S!!! New record for me! Also 2 '09s.

Box#7

'60-'64: 90
'50s: 14
'40s: 7

One war nick in this one, a '43 D. Two Canadians, and an 01 D that looks pretty cool. lol

That's it for this week. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same amount next week.

They made all coins until 1955. Then, cents were resumed between 1968 and 1974, and nickels between 1968 and 1970. Some SBAs were minted for circulation with an S mintmark as well. Also, cents were minted in the 80s at the San Fran mint, but have no mintmark, and are indistinguishable from the Philly ones.
