I can't seem to find an exact match for this Chinese coin. I found it at the beach and it's a bit sand blasted. Hopefully there are enough details to decipher. I believe it's a Cash size and nearest I can tell in may be a Hsuan Tsung? Tao Kuang? Boo San Shan mint? Maybe someone has a better source for identifying this coin. Thanks.

Yup, I saw one like that too. A few details/symbols on each side is slightly different though.

This is Shùnzhì (Shun Chih) Emperor, who reigned from 8th October 1643 – 5th February 1661, although political power was initially in the hands of the Prince Regent Dorgon and he didn’t rule personally until 1651. After his death he is referred to by his temple name Shìzǔ (Shih Tsu).

Coins bearing his reign title 順治 first appeared in 1644, but your coin is from the 4th series, produced in the latter part of his reign. On the reverse, the mint name is in Manchurian and Chinese. It’s Boo Ciowan (Board of Revenue Mint) or Pao-Ch'uan in Manchurian (Fountain Head of Currency).

PS: and yes, it's a cash.

Thanks Red-Coat, I can now see why I had problems.....my Chinese coin book only goes back into the 1700's! :BangHead: That would make it my oldest coin found locally. :icon_thumleft:

Great find! It's interesting you discovered a Qing Dynasty 順治 Shunzhi coin in North America. Most chinese coins found by detecting in North America are from the later qing dynasty 乾隆 qianlong and 嘉庆 jiaqing emperors. Using the posts on Tnet as a reference, I don't think there has been any Ming dynasty coins discovered by detecting in NA. Therefore this could be one of the earliest Chinese coins discovered in NA by detecting (but that is just going by the posts from this site).

I nominated this coin for banner. Many Chinese cash coins are discovered in North America but not a coin from this early in the Qing Dynasty period. It's a great find and should be considered for banner.

Thanks for the info and your banner vote! :icon_thumright: I'm a bit surprised to find it's that old myself. My previous oldest local coin find was 1814, so, it kind of blew that away by about 160 years!
