My son just emailed me that he found this coin this afternoon, here in town, by the river, which is an old area. Gee, I turned down going with him today. Anyway, he says it is thin, and has on it a big 1/4 and the numbers 820 are visible and on the other side looks like a Cross.

So far I have come up empty-handed on this one.

Don

Added a bit lighter photo of it.

Don? If you don't know what it is... how do you expect US to know?

You are the one we rely on for old coppers! LOL

I've been looking... nothing comes close... I betcha it's foreign.

I believe that this may be an 1820 Royalist 1/4 real of Santa Marta, Colombia. These were rather crude and varied a good deal, making exact comparison somewhat difficult. Here are a couple of varieties. There is a better example at the following link; however, you must be signed in to view sharp closeups of both sides.

Thanks PBK, will pursue that, it is interesting, that basically was my son's wild guess, sort of , I tried looking at that area first and drew a blank!! Here is an excerpt from his email to me:

figured it wasn’t a pulltab so I checked it out. Right within the mulch I turned up what I initially thought looked like a nickel, but when I picked it up it was really thin and then I saw what appeared to be a cross. Flipped it over and I saw a great big ¼ plus the numbers 820 of a date.

So then, I’m not sure what it is. It could be a copper ¼ reale from some Spanish colony, or a ¼ something else from another place. It looks like it may have been a bit crude to begin with, and the soil was rough.
