Most people when they get a detector for the first time the urge is to run out and dig holes in order for your metal detecting experience to be a positive and rewarding one. I’ve compiled some simple but effective tips.

The first 2hrs are the most important in this brief period you are getting to know your detector assemble and read the manual then read the manual again.

Pick your first search location with care the back garden should you have one preferably fenced for privacy is an ideal place to learn.

Pin pointing is an art some machines have pin pointing built in but most of the time this may be considered as a guide.

This subject is a guide in its own right more to follow in the next post.

Next take a coin and bury at say 4 inches don’t cover it yet. Sweep your detector over it and note the signal now cover it and again note the signal.

Do this to depths of up to 8 inches this will give you a rough idea of the capabilities of you new machine. When I say rough this is due to a number of factors which we will explore in a latter post.

I spent several hours just doing this but you may want to vary that time until you feel a basic level of comfort in your new found skills.

That’s it for now much more to follow I hope this has been helpful.

Fortunately my Ace 250 came with a DVD, which was pretty helpful (and covered basically everything in the manual). I've improved alot regarding pinpointing (lol, but still miss by a mine now & then). Alot of times I can stick my screwdriver (with a washer welded to the end) into the ground & pry the coin to the surface on the 1st shot. I've also gotten pretty good at removing whatever it was I'd found, and leave the sod looking pretty-much undisturbed (I carry a 12" square piece of heavy black plastic if I need to remove dirt). Like anything else, I figured I'll improve with more time MDing.
