I don't know if anyone else has ever tried this, but for old coins (especially copper) that are simply black and you want to remove the crud quickly and safely, I like to erase it. That's right, I just use a regular pencil eraser to it, and it comes like new.

I have tried this method , and would not use it again. Lucky I tested on clad ,because this technique etches the hell out of the coins. The rubbing effort involved with the scouring pad is useless. If you look close at the nickel you added in the post ,you will see the pitting in it after you cleaned it. This method should be ruled out on any coins.
