My sweet hobnail

For relic hunters only-
I find so many nails when I detect so it was a nice change
and surprise finding my first hob nail.
These nail were used for fastening the outer sole to the mid sole in boots.
Their use goes back to Roman times Caligae boots all the way to WW1.
Very common find in Europe,but uncommon in N.A.
So Buckles are not the only shoe/boot related finds that are possible.

I must of thrown out lots of good stuff when I started detecting.
You learn as you go.

I love old wrought nails, so count me in as a nail nerd.I have spent lots of time conserving my old nails that are eligible. Wrought nails hold up much better than your average cut nail.

I've heard the term "hob nail" before but never knew what it was. Now I do! Nice find!

I have always called hobnails the spikey nails on the bottom of old time loggers shoes. They would prevent slipping on icy ground. I have found a few deep in the woods at old logging sites. They would screw into the bottom of the shoes.
