I'm in Ouray, Colorado tonight. I expected to get over here and out by today. These are some shots from the trip over here. 1st, is heading west on I70 yesterday afternoon. I'm going west on an open road and all the skiers are lined up waiting for Denver to open it's gate and let them all come back in. 2nd, is Leadville in the evening. It dawned on me it was February 21st 1977, I walked into the Manhattan Bar for the first time. That was near 38 years ago now and had a, deja vu, It was on a snowy night just like it was this night, I stumbled into that joint so long ago. Sitting there and looking back at that time, I could say that's were the story all begins. 3rd & 4th I pass a small herd of Mountain Sheep, One was out on the middle of the road and licking it for the salt and he didn't want to move. 5th & 6th is pulling into Ouray for the night. It says I can't go much further from here on Hwy 550, as it is closed.

Perfect capture of I-70 east bound traffic on a Sunday afternoon except in the pic they're movin way too fast. That 550 south out of Ouray was a little spooky even in the summertime for me, so I couldn't feature travellin it in the winter. Take care.

I've been over a couple times in the winter coming from Durango. The snow up on it is DEEP. I've only came onto an avalanche one time on McClure pass. It came down ahead of me and covered the road. Had to go back on hwy 133 to hwy 92 and head home on the hwy 50 way.

I drove the Durango to Ouray once in summer. I didn't see much scenery as I was white knuckled at the time. You could not pay me enough to make that trip in those conditions. Good luck.

Great pics, that was a hell of a storm wasn't it! Glad I didn't have to mess with 70. Hwy 50 going E from the Monarch pass sure was icy this morning! Lots of cars flipped in the ditches in the lower levels closer the Pueblo. Didn't see clear roads until about halfway to Raton on 25.

I stayed in Salida last night because I knew the plows would have worked Monarch good all night. They did and it was pretty clear, but icy. The worst snowstorm I've ever been in was on I25 going south between, Raton & Springer. It took me from 7: PM to midnight to arrive in Las Vegas,NM... The Chevy Lumina I was driving was completely encased in thick ice when I got to LV. That was hell that night. I had to drive with the driver side window down some to see that I wasn't getting to close to the left side of the road. It was 15-20 mph the whole way to Wagon Mound were the storm thin'd out. Thank! God, I had a CB and two other trucker to talk to that night going along at the same slow pace.

It's 33* here, the cat is sleeping by the fireplace and my heater(central) is on 85. And I'm still cold. No preceip, no snow, ice, rain or anything. This must be winter. How do you guys stand that weather? I have to survive till Sunday. Then the 70's again...

Have to watch those icy roads. Back in 1982, January the 2nd or 3rd, we, wife, and 3 kids, followed her brother from Waco to just north of Hillsboro to make sure he got home safely. I kept saying we needed to turn back before the roads froze again. We'd had a big snow on New Year's Eve, during the night. Followed him all the way to his house. Wife kept talking, sitting in the pickup. I finally started driving off. Anyway, we got back to about Abbott, home of ol' Willie Nelson. We found ourselves on a mirror smooth sheet of ice. It took over 2 hours to drive that last 20 miles or so back to Waco.

Don't look like fun to me. Guess I'm getting to old for that stuff. Lived at Lake Tahoe for ONE winter, the cannon for shooting down avalanches on hiway 50 at Echo Summit was
about a quarter mile from our house. That was not a fun winter. I think this year they don't have any snow at all, or at least not enough to talk about.

Those BigHorn don't seem to mind it.:laughing7:

Sunday night the weather drove a heard of deer from the mountains down into Salida. They were just walking around eating peoples trees and bushes and didn't care at all about you driving next to them. I could have taken one with a knife from the drivers window they were that close.

That's quite a drive regardless of weather! I did it- and all over Colorado back in the early '90's on my bike. Was glad to have a little extra 'elbow room' in the lane :-O
Stopped in both Leadville and Ouray. Coulda stayed for ever. Was luck to be able to take the time from work. Thanks for the memories ;)

What I did isn't the brightest thing to do and I did plan an exit first before I approached any further to get a closeup shot. You can tell when an animal like this is getting uneasy with your presence. They sometimes won't move away from you, but let you know your not wanted and take evasive action on you. I could kind of tell that big Ram was getting a bit disturbed with me, so I zoomed in from that point to take the picture.

I don't think you would like a headbutt to much.:laughing7:
