Found my second liberty head in New Hampshire this weekend! It is an entirely different one where the bust is facing the left side. Unfortunately the back is eroded so I am unable to identify it. Any ideas what it might be? Any way, I hope you enjoy it as much as i did finding it.

Looks like a U.S. braided hair large cent. Nice large copper find!

After looking at it a little more closely I'm thinking its an 1857.... that third digit in the date looks a bit odd though.... Maybe 1847?

1840-1857 Large Cent judging by the stronger chin, the lock of hair sticking out from the forehead and braided hair in the back!

Thanks, I was leaning towards large cent but wasn't entirely sure, it came up as coins on the md. That year is definitely tricky to read.

You could try a Hydrogen Peroxide bath to get more detail, but some of the guys on here might caution against it. If you want to keep it for yourself, go ahead and try the HP bath, it will definitely help bring out the detail. At least on mine, it's helped a lot. If you want to sell it, might want to wait on the bath.

I used the 3% stuff you get at Walgreens in a brown bottle, put it in a microwave safe cup (like a coffee cup, but make sure you don't accidentally drink it), heat it for 30 sec and then pour it into another bowl and drop the coin in. After it stops bubbling, you can use a toothpick or a light brush and a bunch of stuff should come off. Go very slowly though so you don't scratch it...

Good luck!
