I hate not having a date on any coin I find and this latest find my SLQ is no exception... so I looked and looked... several ways in different lights... I can barely see the 1 and 9 but we all knew that... and then I saw a slight V indention below the lowest point the lady liberties skirt on the right so I looked at each of the dated 1916 to 1930... several are close but I do believe I have a 1924 D...

What do you all think?

Check out the pictures...

That is a tough call, but I think you are right.

The one trick that sometimes works is to soak the coin in vinegar it will eat away a bit of the coin and in a couple days it might be a tad more readable, In good condition a 1924-D is worth $40 is unreadable it is melt. You might end up with something in the middle as a value and at least get your answer :BangHead:

I think you are correct - 1924. You can see the base outline enough to see the bottom half of the "2" and the bottom stem of the "4". (I outlined it on the bottom half of your picture below).

I can't see it, sorry. I don't know if there is a way to confirm that year.

there isn't any way to tell what it is except for what we see and everyone sees different... I'm just happy its a SLQ... but it is always nice to have a date too!

I agree with you Chukers.

I got a dateless last year and while I was very happy, it still bothers me and I wonder about the date. Prettiest coin ever minted though.

especially because of the 1916 SLQ... they are extremely rare and of course valuable.

I know how you feel, in 40 years I have only found 3, like grampa used to give me to buy candy. My last one has the 3 stars under eagle missing and think its 1917?, not 1916? Silver wore fast on most dates back then.Even when I delivered newspapers in 60s they had considerable wear.:4leafclover: I remember on CSI they had something to raise serial numbers missing on weopons but maybe it was fantasy?

Have you tried putting tissue paper over the area and very lightly rubbing over with dark chalk? This sometimes works if you have just enough raised area left.

no... I seen something like that... they used some kind of acid... like the date restorer for restoring buffalo nickel dates... it eats away at the less dense metal and reveals the stamped area which is more dense because of the pressure applied to that area. I dunno if I want to do that just for the fact its more of a conversation piece without a date... but then again the SLQ is just a neat looking coin in itself.
