First of all I will just say right off, that I didn't find any silver....again but you will have to read on to see the two surprises I did find !! .....
I haven't been able to go detecting for a long time now, but I finally got a chance to go out a few days ago. I went to the park close to my house for a few hours, which I know has a history which is very old. Officially a park in 1912, but the it was used even before that all the way back to 1820s, anyway, it was the same place I found my 1st silver coin a while back at. I am still trying to get used to digging deeper targets, as I still hit a lot of deep iron targets that I thought were good signals, and others that didn't show up once I got down deep with my probe.
As you can see from the photo, I got a handful of zincs,, some quarters and some dimes and some trash. and two other things I will describe below.
Below is my new favorite find!! it's a copper emblem. When I first dug it up I could tell right away that I had something old, as I could see some design on it. When I cleaned it off at home I was surprised to find a DATE!! It says "MIDWINTER CARNIVAL PHOENIX ARIZ. 1896" This is the first thing I have found that was from the 1800's, or to which I know was from the 1800s that had a date on it!! There is a bird with wings spread out on top with a lady holding a sash or something in the midst of a grass or wheat field and a star behind or? maybe an angel? The item is actually very dark, and I played with photoshop to lighten it up some in this photo so it can be seen better. It was about 8 inches down and I pulled about 3 screw caps from the top of her before I locked on to it. I am so surprised to find this and I am very exited, this is way better then a silver dime in my opinion.
After doing some research, I found that Phoenix took the lead in Arizona in the entertaining tourists business with it's winter carnival which first started in 1896!! (no way the first year I found!) The carnival featured Cowboys and Indians and was called the midwinter carnival for about 3 years until it was renamed the cowboy and Indian carnival in 1899. It included a week long of festivities which had Indian artisans and a program of crafts and games and contests. there were Apache basket weavers , Pima pottery makes. It also features, Brass Bands, soldiers, fireworks and more. Nearly 300 indians were involved from their local reservations. It appears the Cowboy and Indian Carnivals lasted until 1909 when Phoenix leaders replaced them with territorial fairs, which focussed on the agricultural and technological accomplishments of the territory at the time. (WOW all of this before Arizona become a state in 1912!!)
This is my new second favorite find!! It's my FIRST Dog License !! It Says " D. L. 243 Redlands, 1910" Amazing!! I wonder if they have records on the dogs or something at city hall still?! I am in the processing of finding out about that. I already found out from a city 1914 ordinance, that it costs 4$ for a female D.L. and 2$ for a male D.L. And it was .25 cents if they lost it and needed a new one.
ok, thanks for reading my post. Both of these finds that have history make them better then a standard silver coin,, but soon I will be finding silver like crazy !! "yeah right!"
