My "Pingin" jacket

I saw a post on another forum where a fellow lost a farthing while detecting this weekend and it reminded me of the time I lost an Indianhead penny between where I found it and possibly in my car. I had a happy ending to that incident, I went back to look for the IH and instead found 1797 Large Cent! My first 1700's Large Cent. That was quite a few years ago.

Well, the reason I lost the Indianhead in the first place was that I put the penny in my top open end shirt pocket, and evidently it must have slipped out when I bent over to dig another target.

At times I used to put my finds in my wallet, or in the jeans pockets, but the finds sometimes were too much for those locations.

I was watching a show on fishing and then it hit me, why not use a fishing vest to be a metal detecting hunting vest. So, off I went to the local sporting goods store and bought a fishing vest.

Since I have gone to using the vest, I now know where most of my "stuff" is all the time, I can keep everything short of the kitchen seat in the vest and I have been using a vest now for over 7 years.

Attached are photos that show roughly what I keep in the vest, and of course each of us is different and would have different ideas, but I really like this "system".

Which brings me to one other thing of note. When you find that nice silver coin, or old large copper, ring, whatever. Where do you put it till you get home? I know some use film canisters, but they are a tad bulky and can be lost also. Besides, not too many us have those empty containers anymore with the advent of digital cameras. :)

I use a small Manila envelope, 2.5 x 4.25" to put my finds in while in the field and upon return at home I annotate the folder for a record of what I found, where I found and the date. I included a photo of the folders, I bought a box of 500 several years ago and still have some left. :)

Hope this helps some of you, let me add, I have three fishing vests, I basically just use the one in the photos, only about 29 dollars, I did buy an expensive one from Beans, but for one that cost 3 times more, I really do not like it, but it is the one I would use if it is really cold out and I got it as a larger size to go over whatever winter coat I am wearing.

I recommend getting one that fits comfortably over what your wear for the majority of your hunting time.

Again, I hope this post helps, or at least puts some good ideas into your heads.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

AHA, been using a fishing vest myself for several years. Also carry a bookpack filled with extra stuff if I'm going far from the truck for an extended period of time. Anyhow, the fishing vest is by far the most convenient and practical way to go when it comes to having everything within easy access. I also use the film cannisters (I've still got HUNDREDS of them. LOL) because I'll put a single ring or single coin in one so that it doesn't get lost in the pocket. I've literally spent hours looking for a dime or a thin gold ring in my vest pockets. So the film can definitely makes little things easier to find. But to each his own.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Forgot to mention a very good reason why I do not like film cannisters, Did ya ever try and get a Large Cent or a Colonial Copper into one? No way, :) They fit nicely in the envelopes and if you do not find anything, they are not bulky like a film cannister.......

I think carrying a film cannister with a cotton ball in it, is a good idea for like putting a pewter button in that migh deteriorate if just put into envelope or your pocket, but the folder system has worked well for myself and my son for quite a few years now.....

Don

I live in CALIFORNIA...we don't have Large Cents or Colonial Coppers. But if we did, I'd use whatever worked to get those babies back home!!!

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Now that is a sweet idea! My fishing vest doesn't get much use anymore, since I've discovered this hobby. I have lost a few coins out of the pouch my md came with because Id drop the coins in the front pocket instead of the larger back pocket. Nothing lost but clad thank goodness!
keep posting these good ideas man.

Been using one for years

Great story and excellent idea. I have had one of those vest in my kit for some time and it is just the ticket. I bought it XX Large so I could wear it over a jacket if I wanted.

I saw one at Wlamart last season for about $12.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Don,
My husband has always used his fishing vest for mding.
I use a 5gal plastic bucket to carry everything 'cept detector,,,,,,BUT,,,,all GOOD stuff goes in a bubblewrap bag in my pocket:)

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

That's a really cool vest. Great idea. I've been using a Marlboro fanny pack that I got years ago trading in the miles off the packs. I also still use a pair of Marlboro boots for digging.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

OOOOOOOOH! I love the idea of a vest!!! I've been wearing cargo pants. After a good haul I'm always afraid of them slipping. LOL Now depending on your personality; an optimist or a pessimist... It's either a full moon or a half monty. :D

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Been using one for years. Make sure you get one that is extra big. I went with XXL. Here's why:
When you are bundled up in a coat against the weather, a larger one will slip on the outside and you wont have to fumble in your clothes for a pouch that way. When it is really cold, I use one more for this reason, despite it's other shortcomings.

"Shortcomings? What might those be," you ask.

Well, there is only one as I see it, after much use of the thing. In essence, the fault lies with the pockets.
Like all pockets, they are deisgned to put things in and then hold them there. But these, like all pockets, will allow things to fall out when you bend over. This is especially so with the ones you use most often, like the larger ones, which will normally be used for found trash and common coins. The only way to stop this is to close them each time.

This is fine for any pockets that you keep the occasional silver coin or piece of jewelry in. However, for the large "Trash" and "common coin" pockets... well, I am in and out of them so often that all the zipping and velcro-ing becomes more of a bother than anything else!

So, I now use the vest as a secondary piece of gear, not a primary. See, it is a great place to stick things like GPS units, pinpointers, cellphones, lunches, the aforementioned good coins and jewelry, doodads/gadgets, etc. This was its original intent and one that I have reverted to. For the dynamics of trash collection and common finds, however, its back to the bucket mouth pouch w/ wide belt.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Very close to what i use, i use this type because it gives added support to the back, has multiple pockets, mine has 8 permenant made on (loose fit so use a canister inside) web belt u can attach anything to, i carry an entrenching tool on the back in its pouch, cantens, digging tool and with the padded shoulders it feels like ur not wearing anything at all, plus it is adjustable for warm or cold weather wear. U can find them at just bout any army/navy surplus store. They are so versatile u can add as many pockets or items as u wish.

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

Sleeper,
Doesnt that have a Mil Spec name like ALICE belt or something? Id like to give that a try...

Re: My "Pingin" jacket

dahut, it is in the Alice family similar to MOLLE gear, but its designed for lighter weight and easier manuverability, looking up reference name for ya>>>tactical load bearing vest >>yes milspec. They come in many different configs, and most army/navy surplus stores have them.

heres a link for one on ebay, NOTE it does not have a belt u can buy them seperatly:the top 4 pockets are for M-16 clips bottom 2 pockets are for gernades, the flaps do not fit real tight so u need an inner container. But u can add anything u want on the belt or harness and it feels like ur not carrying anything at all. I have 2 canteens, an Entrenching tool(folding shovel) 2 added side packs and a fanny pack u can carry 2 full days worth of supplies and not get worn out. It is adjustable for different seasons and sizes, they only come in one size but if u look at the pic in that ad u can see they have alot of adjustments, to fit anyone. If u do a search on ebay there are many different styles avial>> Tactical load bearing vest or LBV or Molle.
