My own dig site

I have been metal detecting for about 10 years now not really spending alot of time searching. We moved to the country a few years ago and I searched our woods behind our house finding nothing. After the leaves fell this last year I noticed a depression in the ground around some old trees. I got a shovel and started digging and found an old rock lined well.Searching next to that I started to find 1830's large cents, musketballs, buttons, bone forks etc. Everytime I go out I find something. It looks like there could have been a log cabin of some sort on this spot many years ago. I feel so lucky to be able to walk out my back door and go right to work detecting. Lately I have been finding lots of old plow blades, horse items, and harrow plow pins. Most days I would fill a bucket with rusty items and I have no idea what they are. I can only get to this area in the winter because when the plants start to grow, everything is covered in poison ivy.As soon as the weather breaks I will be out again.

Sounds like a real nice site to detect! Check for an outhouse and a trash dump. Would be great to dig out an old outhouse, could be lots of goodies in there, coins, bottles and maybe even a cache. Nice finds so far and HH, Mike

I have been looking for the outhouse area for some time. I think it would be down wind from the site. It just happens to be that this area is thick with sticker bushes and I can't get thru it without being snagged a million times. Also its so thick that its impossible to swing the coil. I would like to get to bottom of the well some how to see what's down there. According to the local history, Morgan's Raiders came thru this area and whoever lived here could have thrown their valuables down the well to hide them.

Glad you found such a convenient site skimpro. You might even want to invest in some roundup to knock back that brush in the spring. Sure hope you can share some pic's of your finds on here soon. I'd love to see what history you're digging up.

also you can get a machete or woods mower and clear the underbrush after the poison ivy has been killed with round up...... make for a lot easier maneuvering......good luck

Lucky you are! Post us some pictures!!! :o

And ya know....you can still get poison ivy in the winter tooooo... :P

Hey, spro, welcome to Tnet. Sounds like you have a good site there. We would love to see pictures of what you've found so far.

Do you have a scanner? That works pretty good for pictures, if you don't have a camera.

Would like to see pics of your finds and the site would be nice. Clear it out during early spring. Good luck. Burdie

poisin ivy = paraquat ,a very powerful weed killer .knock back that ivy and youll work it in the spring and summer...

Good idea by Charlene with the roundup! Might take some work to find the outhouse, would make one great story if you were to find it and some finds. That well might not have been very deep, if you were to dig it out, it could easily fill with water. Consider several steps ahead, you might need a pump. The outhouse should have a small depression no doubt but those small holes can easily fill with leaves and debri, walking over suspected areas of the outhouse might help, you could find a soft spot. Tearing the place apart layer by layer might be the only answer to finding some hot spots. Good luck and HH, Mike
