My oldest silver coin (Friday)

Well, I was able to take off work 1/2 day today - worked some OT and just took off early rather than take the extra $... hell, my time is so much more valuable to me than money will ever be...

Wasn't sure where I wanted to go, but I started with a couple of vacant/razed lots - only significant thing I found there was at one lot where the house would've been, I must've found 100 Zlincolns just on or partly in the ground, scattered along with prolly 20 or so marbles... maybe was a kids piggy bank or something, I dunno... but nothing old, and I wanted OLD...

Well, anyway, I was in the mood to do some serious huntin', so I headed off, and ended up at the golf course... ( for those not familiar, this is Hancock golf course, est. in 1899, the oldest golf course in Texas)(and yes, I got permission, and it was really difficult... very painstaking... i just asked!)... anyway, I decided to hit some clear area near a road, and near some tee boxes...

Started out finding the usual clad, a few quarters, which is always nice... then later found a wheatie... thought, "hmm, maybe..." so I keep on goin'...

People are coming and going by, I'm nodding and smiling and saying hi, no issues... and then...

This couple of guys come up in their cart, waiting for the previous players to finish hitting... I could tell I was in trouble real quick... I thought I heard them sniker, and 'whsphwshwhswhp' with each other... then I hear "FORE" from one of them real loud, and being a somewhat intelligent, cognizant human being - I JUMPED and looked up... well, the skinhead-looking one put his head down and was laughing his a$$ off... so I just look back down and keep hunting... abut then I hear one of them "mimicking" the sound of a detector... now, I'm also a pretty reasonable, logical, down-to-earth guy (as well about 5'11" and 230 lbs), but at this point, I'm feelin' like I need to at least say something... like maybe "wtf did you THINK I was gonna do, NOT look?"... but, I didn't, kept my mouth shut and kept swingin'...

And about THEN, I got one of them nice, smoooooth, kinda big signals... I thought, prolly a clad quarter down a couple inches - cuz it had a nice, smooth tone around the edge of the signal... so, I get down, cut a plug, and flip it over, and then I see THIS...

And I'm just frozen... cuz I KNOW it ain't a quarter! I realize it's a half, and dudes and dudettes, I yooped out REAL good!

Got a little dirt off of it and this is what I saw:

I had, in my hand, a coin that hadn't seen the light of day since probably before 1900 - a VERY nice 1894-O Barber half! omg y'all... I was shaking, and I sent my gf a text: I found an 1894 half! and she sent back: KICKA**!

I tried to hunt some more, but I just couldn't keep from stopping to take that gorgeous coin out of my pocket and just stare at how beautiful it was... it's been almost 20 years since I found a Barber half, and I swear on my 66 I said to myself this morning, something like - 'worked a half day, now I'm gonna go find me a half' - and I did!

Great story!! Excellent Find!! Now that it is warm weather there are people in every spot I hunt. Pain in the A%^ always with the questions.Ignore and keep digging.Going to a spot deep in the woods soon,no people just Bears :icon_pirat:

Did you show it to the "golfers", because I've noticed that large cents will also shut people up in a hurry !!!! Usually when they find out you've dug a couple hundred dollar coin, they start thinking you're not quite such a dork.

Nice barber half. I have yet to find a silver half. Still looking for my first.

Retribution baby....Tell them golfers when they lose their rings, keys or whatever that you will gladly find their keys for them so they can drive the h$ll away from you while you find your treasure..Killer find man. Good for you!

Very nice find...

and on a golf course even better...

How deep was it??

Because it is in great shape, it appears that it was luckily spared of any aerifying equipment that could have beat it up badly.

Good job,

damn what a nice coin congrats;
I got my first franklin yesterday, i cant imagin diggin a half 60 yrs older

Wow, that's a nice find indeed. You definitely won't forget that dig.
Congrats to you!!
