Today was the biggest shock of my life. My Buddy, His Wife, and I went detecting and it was somewhat of a miscombobulated morning. First off my shovel broke the day before and also my pinpointer...I was kinda dazed from the flu from the beginning of the week and it was crazy. We finally started detecting and it was can after can after can with limited space after the home owner requested us to do so. That went on well after lunch until about an hour before we left and our day finally changed. My buddy got a nice hit and he dug down a few inches, revealing a nice Treble Gilt with some crushed gravel which showed us an old road was there. I went a few steps ahead and I got a nice hit and dug down about 4 inches. I searched around for a few minutes and couldn't find my target so I pushed all the dirt in the hole and tried again. It pinged off showing 4 inches and I pulled the plug out and my buddy passed me his pinpointer. After a few minutes of prodding...there it was. I jumped up and asked him what that was. And I pulled it out and it was the size of a fifty cent piece and i clasped it in my hands and shouted some! It took me about an hour to figure out what it was because of severe corrosion. But with the help of a local insurance
agent/metal detecting sage we solved the mystery ...and behold my 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent!
We identified it by two different clues. At the bottom of the coin I could see the 1, 8 and 0 clearly. It took some cleaning to show the 1. Also Lady Liberty's face is outlined facing toward the right, which is hard to see in the photo. But I do have a question about the coin. Should I do any more cleaning or no?
