well It can be either an 1867, 1877, 1887 or 1897. Maybe looking at it under magnification will reveal what it is.

SCORE! Broke into the 1800's for the first time, NICE! I've seen your posts and I think your other oldie was a 1917 wheatie.
Now you need some old silver and.....it's on!
Congratulations, thanks for posting and Luck to ya next time out.

Yes I was excited and nervous to clean it to much, maybe I can get a date on it

Awesome Nathan W! I know the feeling of finding your first Indian Head Penny. Found my first today also 1889.

Whatever the date, Big time Congrats for nabbing your oldest coin- hope another, even older one is right around the corner!

Nice!

Looks like 1879 to me. Here's the best I could get it with basic image adjustments.

Congrats on finding your oldest coin ever - it's always a day to remember ! :icon_thumright:

It's entirely up to you but you could probably get more detail on the date and the coin overall by ...
(1) Soaking it in Olive Oil for a few weeks then cleaning with a Wooden Tooth Pick.
(2) Rubbing very lightly with Extra Fine Steel Wool.
(3) Clean with "Andre's Pencils" - they work great.

Good Luck !

I know I'm getting some of the pencils as a gift soon, I will try them out on it

Nice find. Good luck with the cleaning. I have had mixed luck with the Andre’s pencils, but it’s probably because of my weak skills. Congrats!

Thanks yes when I seen the head dress I said omg an Indian!
Too funny. When I found mine this morning, I saw the reverse first. I saw the shield and said holy crap! I was sure when I picked it up it would just be another memorial.

I just got a set a few weeks ago. I had an oddly green crusty 1974 quarter and couldn't see the date. The pencils worked great. I haven't tried them on an old copper though.
