My oldest coin so far '87 IH

Hello,

This afternoon, I stopped at an older looking house that I'd been eyeballing for awhile and knocked on the door. The yard looked like original grade with big old trees in it. Old gentleman gave me the go ahead but said that it had already been detected. I figured I'd give it a try anyway. I made a few test passes to see if there were any spots that still had signals. Dug a few trash signals that were few and far between. I was about to leave and find another yard when I got a zinc penny signal at 2 inches. I figured ah, at least I'll get a zincoln out of this yard. Dug the plug and there it was at 2 inches, but something looked wierd about this zincoln. Anyway, as you can see, it was a '87 IH. It has pretty good detail and pre dates the house by almost 30 years. I wonder how it got there and got so shallow? Maybe the other detectorist dug it up with another signal and forgot to recheck the hole. I decided to check the rest of the yard more thoroughly but only found trash and a couple newer pennies. At least I got one keeper.

Happy Hunting

Evan

Clean that one up and repost it. It looks like it is in pretty good shape, congrats! Ya never know on depth sometimes. Sometimes work to a driveway, septic or trenching lines can bring em up higher.

Beautiful, I have only ever found 2 indian head pennies in my life. One when I was 13 in Colorado (1990) and it was a 1902 penny in my moms tip jar. The second was also a 1902 penny i found detecting last year.

still searchin for my first IH..im jealous :tard:

Re: My oldest coin so far '87 IH

this year of the 5 IH pennies I found only one was deep (7")
one was on TOP of the ground in a cornfield
one was 3" deep in a park
one was 2" deep at our local museum
one was 2-3" deep at a 1800's church

shallow does not mean it is gonna be a new coin, sometimes coins just don't sink far

That Indian is a sweet find...lots of detail, little wear! There's no rhyme or reason for these oldies to be dug at 2" depths or at 7" depths!! I've dug them deep, and I've found them on the surface, especially on heavily traveled walking/bridle paths!! Nice find, my friend!
