Yesterday I got my first V nickel since 2006, as well as my first silver quarter of 2008. The V is an 1897 and the silver quarter is a 1953 Washington. The V beats my previous 1902 record for oldest nickel I've found in circulation. I've been through over 8,000 quarters to find my first silver, too! I will update tonight with pictures of both of them (i've got to get to bed for work in 8 hours).

Fantastic Doc! Way to break into the 19th century with that nickel. Hopefully there's more to come.

Immy

Your signature says you have 85 of 87 pennies in your book. WHich two are you missing?

Re: My oldest circulation nickel find

1949-S and the ol' toughie 1955-S. Amazing that 50 years after the wheat series ended, the two wheaties with the lowest mintages (post-1940 anyway) are the last two I need.

Re: My oldest circulation nickel find

I have found 3 1949 -S in 2008, and 7 total since I started searching pennies last October. (I am keeping track of 2008 seperately).

I have found 1 1955-S in 2008 and 4 total since October.

Want to swap for them, or do you want the joy of finding them yourself?

I have not found yet 1938-S, 1938-D, 1936-D, 1933-D, 1933, 1932-D, 1932, 1931-S, and 1931-D. PLus a bunch that are older than that, but those are the ones in the 30s I need. I need nothing in the 40s or 50s.

Or I'll swap you BOTH of the ones you need for just ONE of teh 1955 Double die. :D

I'm not anxious to swap, but if you wanted to do it, just to finish out your set, I'd do it to help you out. :-)

Nah, thanks tho. I love finding them in the wild. And these last two will be sweet because it'll complete my 7th album of 1941-1974 pennies. :icon_thumleft:

I found the 1949-S just today...go figure (my 5th of the year) and I have 2 of the 1955-S so far this year.

I took a look at my collection spreadsheet and although they aren't all in books, I have completed 8 full sets of 1941-1974.
2 more sets missing only the 1943-S.
and 4 more sets missing only 1943-D and 1943-S.

My lowest non-steel cent is 1942-S (14) followed closely by 1949-S and 1955-S (15 each).

Most of mine were found in the wild with the following exceptions:
* about half of my steel pennies
* 1 of the 1955-S (a present from many many years ago)

I did purchase a small collection a few years ago, but the tougher dates from 1941-1974 were missing from all the books except for maybe 1 or 2 total.

I also may have a few more from a 500 count wheat bag I purchased last spring, but I haven't added into my collection yet. But those weren't from the wild anyway.

Love the silver quarter, Ive never had any but I think I may go buy some, or trade for some.
