I have been swinging over two local schools in my area and these sites still produce the goods.

Pic below is from a 3 hour hunt at my old high school built in 1951, but has been a school yard since 1938, and before that a private property dating back to 1915 or older as a 1915 topo map is as old as I can find.

I have found about $50 in clad at this school, three silver dimes ( 41,59,64 ) 15 wheat's, and a silver ring.

This weekend added another silver ring, two more wheat's, and about a extra 4 bucks in clad.

Great finds........you have inspired me to visit a now closed school about an hour distant..........no idea if any MD has searched it, nor who owns it but it looks abandoned.......

Those abandoned schools usually get sold off to private parties. Asking locals that live beside or around the property will most likely find you the owners name. I'm in the process of getting permission to do another 1938 high school that was used till the early eighties and recently sold to my counties housing authority. They are getting ready to tear it down and put in elderly housing buildings so its a race of time for that one.

What area of the school so you look? Playground? Ballfield? Or just all over?

At this school its been a grassy area in front of the school and the baseball field (no football field here). The two silver rosie dimes and most wheates were found near the inside of a concrete wall that separates the property from the main highway. Back in the 50's and 60's it was told to me that the students would sit on the wall at lunch time and break. The 41 merc and both silver rings were found in the baseball field.

The areas I would REALLY like to swing over was a grassy area on each side of the front steps and around the section of the school that was the original 1938 school building, but all of this has been covered over with concrete and blacktop in a recent remodel when it was converted to a grade school and both buildings combined into one.

At any school, or other property for that matter, look for and swing over any high foot traffic areas 1st..I generally work my way around the building and then out toward the sports fields.

thanks for the info

You have a nice site there. Great finds!

It's been a good site..I have only been detecting since this past winter and it was the 1st area I knew I wanted to hit. I was lucky enough to get permission from the principle without any hassle. I graduated at this school in 1992..sure wish I was into the hobby back then..because 60% of the old pre 60's sections on the property have been covered over in concrete since then and what I have found must be just a fraction of what is for sure covered over now.

The other school property I mentioned above that I'm working on getting permission is still untouched or modified land and looks just as it did in 1938 when it was built. I found a few old photos online and one pic was taken in 1938 when the school was new.. it has these old 30's car's sitting outside the building entrance..just makes ya mouth water and what kind of coins lay buried at this place :headbang:

The other school property I have been doing is local to the area I live now and was the school my wife attended. It was built in the 1960's..and was a private property going back to at least 1915 as well...not one silver coin found there..only 1 wheat cent..but have found a silver pendant, silver ring, and over $100 in clad..most from the baseball field..and still finding clad at an average of $3 an hour swinging..The big difference in clad is that my old school always had just under 300 students a year..my wifes school averages about 1200 students and this school has been detected twice before ..they must have been looking for gold because to much high tone clad everywhere and not many nickels found there.

I will try and get some pics up soon of the finds Ive found earlier..however the clad has already been cleaned and spent lol

I appreciate the offer, but don't have the extra time needed to mod a website..I used to mod a very busy Windows computer tech site a few years ago..lots of traffic on there and the constant spammers kept the ban buttons working overtime.

Nice finds...Now that school is out I'll have to hit ours....I hit the local Park this morning a cleaned out $2.06..$1.96 in clad and a 1945 Roosevelt dime..
