Hello everyone from Madrid,

in these days of confinement that we're experiencing in our country I have managed to recover a little treasure from childhood. It is my old collection of rocks and minerals. Unfortunately, I lost the labels with their names, and I need to identify them in order to help my little children with an online Geology lesson that they're trying to follow up after state schools closed.

To my relief, I found this forum, as I was unable to find a similar forum in my language.

I would appreciate that somebody could help me, as my ignorance won't allow me to carry out any identification.

Take good care wherever you are, and thanks a lot in advance.

All my affection from Spain.

Eve.

Hello from Arizona Eve, it's kind of hard to get a good look at your specimens, some look interesting, maybe take some good close up shots in better lighting, it will help someone identify your stones better, the second to last specimen looks a lot like a calcite crystal, a simple acid/vinegar or scratch test would tell if that's what it is. Sorry I couldn't be more of help, you take care of yourself as well, Spain is getting hit pretty hard itself with this "Chinese" corona virus nightmare.
Take care and God bless,
Steve.

Welcome to the forum EveM, as suggested natural lighting and some slightly clearer shots would help but these are my thoughts based on what I see. From the top : 1 and 4 are not identifiable a streak test may help as they look like iron minerals, 2 appears to be Quartz with Tourmaline as does 10 but 2 definitly shows Tourmaline structures, 3 maybe a bit of Adventurine a green colored quartz mineral, 5 may be Apatite the structure looks right, 6 and 7 look like feldspar material a streak and hardness text may help, 8 is Pyrite a natural light picture would help, 9 is quartz but I cant tell if the lighting is affecting the color as it almost appears amythesine (purple) in your shot, 11 needs a better picture but looks like a metamorphic material, 12 as steve said looks like calcite a hardness test and/or acid test would help as it could be clear quartz as well, 13 is a mixed rock possibly a granite but the purple red areas are compacted Garnet crystals with nice color.

Try looking at the minerals and testing methods to help you and your kids determine what's what and feel free to return with your results :) Alot of us are under stay at home orders as well so I understand the need to keep an active mind. Lots to be learned and rock hounding is a great hobby both at home and in the field. Stay safe. DD
