Just tied out a brand new permission last night and the first ding turned up this silver beauty:

Best part is I'm going to post it to the owner of the land tomorrow as he can i.d. which of his family it belonged to and I think he'll be delighted to have this bit of his family history back in daylight!

That's a beautiful piece indeed , is there a lot of wear on the medallion? it look's like that is the case, as Mary's face is flat and much detail is lost, kinda like a silver coin would wear ,it could be pretty old & would seem it was cherished by the amount of wear it shows. If you don't find an owner ,it is a def, keeper. Very Nice

Yes, it's a beauty, nice size too. Of course I'd love to keep it but the man who owns the land is really interested in it and it's history so I reckon he'll be delighted to have it and it's an heirloom of his family after all. I'll be interested to know his relationship to the person in the inscription back in 1904 - hope to know by the end of the week! I've kept some photos of it and a pencil rubbing of both sides as mementos..... Could be lots of Loretos - I'm in Ireland so there was no shortage of convents in those days!

Beautiful piece !

That's a very cool find. It would be interesting to have the family find who it belonged to, learn about them, maybe even see a picture of them! I love that kind of thing...let us know what happens!

Ok, finally heard back from the landowner (bit of a delay via the post office) who was delighted to get the medal 'back in the family'. His father was one of 11 children and he was second eldest (born in 1905). His older sister however was born 1904 - more details still to check out but it looks like it was given to her maybe as a christening/baptism gift. She passed away in the 1990's at a ripe old age but as she had moved away, it's likely a good few years since the medal was lost.

Awesome find!
