Anyone try acetone for cleaning coin finds (aka nail polish remover)? Works great on proofs/UNC coins that have fingerprints or light dirt. Obviously, you don't want to use it on anything valuable. A lot of us search halves and come across some fingerprinted proofs. Give it a try!

Don't use nail polish remover, as it is not pure acetone. Buy it pure from Home Depot or a similar store.

Anyone that have gold buffs that have rust spots dip them in bleach it works! If its rust?? I don't know but bleach does the job.

Gold doesn't rust. As long as it isn't a proof, bleach can't alter collector's value, since it is just bullion.

I am wondering:

Does acetone work well to remove rust on steel and green corrosion on copper? I have some corroded coppers and a really rusted steel cent I would like to clean off, and would rather use acetone than electrolysis.

From my personal experience acetone is good at removing recent fingerprints and smudges however any "old" prints will be difficult to remove.

I've always used acetone for my impared proofs/dirty clad, it works like a charm :)

I use a cleaner called "Magic Tumble Cleaner" for cleaning my clad coins and it works great.

Hey Sag, I'm not sure on the cents (copper) but, I use a vinegar and water solution to soak my shop tools in, I have bought rusted tools before from garage sales and it takes off all the rust, I let them soak over night, works like a charm. You should be able to find it on the internet, I haven't done it in a few years, but I think it was 2 parts vinegar 1 part water. HH, Maverick.

Gold should not rust unless kept in such horribly controlled conditions, gold is a very stable metal that usually doesn't rust(oxidize) .

Gold and silver will not rust. What you are seeing is either tarnish or corrosion.

Acetone can be safely used on most metals. It will do NOTHING when tackling corrosion. It works best to remove organic material from metals including grease, oil, and dirt.

The proper way to "clean" a coin is to use acetone. Do not rub it with anything. Soak in pure acetone and lightly roll a clean cotton swap over the surface of the coin to lift off dirt.
