Got out today on a cellar hole hunt. ALOT of hiking envolved, and many hours enduring hungry insects..but it paid off in the end. I finnaly found the military button I've been seeking for quite some time now. No coppers today, but this button (in my opinion) is better than a crusty large cent. I also found this "star" item....any ideas or suggestions as to what it may be?....I knew today was gonna be a good day from the get go.....I eyeballed a silver pandora bracelet on the ground at the gas station at 5:30 am....well thanks for checkin it out!

Great stuff! That is a sweet early NY button there.

What does the back of the star look like? And can you post it with a ruler or coin for size reference?

The star is exactly the same on both sides, has a little weight to it and is about an inch wide

The way it's laying there, it looks like it is more flat on one side. Is it? Do you think it is lead filled or just solid brass?

Can you see filing marks on the brass with a magnifying glass? (In other words, is it CAST brass?)

Thanks in advance,

Buckles

A nice early New York. I didn't see where anyone told you the time period. In case you don't know the button dates 1814 to 1820 or so. The star looks like it could be a cape pin but if the front and back are the same I'm not sure

Or center of a concho but not sure how it would have been attached.

Very interesting finds :icon_thumright: That button is a killer.
