The locket you have there is called a "Mourning Locket". The photo of the women and the style of the metal work would date it to around 1870 or 80. These are very popular items and are widely collected. You didn't mention if there was makers mark anywhere, if you can find one and do a bit of research on the internet it would definitely increase it's value. I'd take it to a reputable jeweller and have it appraised.

I would guess that the value, without knowing more about it, would be $50 - $75. If it's marked and the cameo is real and the gold is real (not plated), then the skys-the-limit on the price.

Good luck,
Dave

thanks! Where should I look for a mark?

If you happen to have a jewellers loop or a good magnifying glass, just look all over the body of the piece. If it's a good quality piece you should be able to see a series of numbers like .925 or 14k or a couple of letters like TM or DK. Most good quality jewellers were proud of their works and took the time to mark the jewellery. I'll enlarge your photo's and see if I can see anything.

also from this era would there be a gold mark?

That's true . . . that's why I suggest taking it to a professional for an assessment. My specialty has never been jewellery, but I find antique jewellery very interesting and I love how every antique item, no matter what it is, has a story to tell us . . . if we only stop and listen.
