Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
This past Sunday a friend & I went out to my favorite battlefield to do some relic hunting. I had high hopes of finding several goodies, but all I seemed to be finding was modern bullets, can slaw and my favorite? ?12th Georgia buttons? (12 GA shotgun shells) ?Dang, those things sound good!!!? :BangHead: I was using my AT Pro with the 5x8DD coil, hoping to find some goodies mixed in with some iron in a particularly trashy part of the field.

About 2:00pm, I started toward the truck to get a drink of water, swinging along the way. This particular field is a harvested cotton field with cut stalks. So you have to swing in the rows and up against the stalks, that 5"x8" head helps. As I made my way along, about 30? from my truck I got a really deep signal, no ID but consistent high tones directly below one of the stalks. I hit pinpoint and the best signal I got said 10?+. I stuck my shovel in the dirt to mark my spot, went to the truck and got my water. I went back and started digging, expecting to pull whatever it is out within a couple of scoops. Checked the hole, nope, it?s still in there. Dig some more and the signal is getting better. I get down on my knees, stick the ProPointer in the hole and get a slow chirp at the bottom, still have to dig it out a little more. Finally, I get to it and can feel it, but I have to loosen up the dirt to pull it out. Once it?s out I see that it?s two pieces that line up. My first thought is this is part of a pair of binoculars, but I?m uncertain. I check the hole and there?s nothing else in there, I then look at how deep it is. I stick my Lesche in and it?s about 6? deeper than the top of the Lesche handle, so the target was about 14? deep by my estimation. I posted pictures on several sites and some folks on another site said the same thing, binocular tube.

I?ve been doing a lot of reading on this particular battle and I learned that this part of the battlefield saw heavy artillery action. Reports state that a confederate artillery caisson received a direct hit and the resulting explosion killed several draft animals and a number of men. My binocular tube was found within 100 yards of this location. There is no way I can say for certain that this was lost during the fighting or the resulting carnage of that artillery action, but finding it that close is good enough for me. It?ll be going in my display case?
