My "Ken" frame

Here are some of the relics that my son has sent me from the Grand Canyon area. I didn't realise that I had this much stuff. Can anyone tell me what the round pottery discs with the holes in them were used for? Upper left in the frame.

Re: My "Ken" frame

I have 2 of those discs. Only from Illinois.
The archys told me it had something to do with making thread or weaving thread.
It's been a long time since I asked.
Not sure how it works.

Yeah, But I can't show it here! For My Eyes Only! :laughing7:

Re: My "Ken" frame

i guess that is that polychrome anasazi pottery. Could the round things be ear spools? Nice finds. Looks like they came from a very dry arid spot. Nice collections.

Re: My "Ken" frame

I was thinking ornament or maybe game pieces on the drilled ones, just a wild guess. Thanks for sharing that frame.

Re: My "Ken" frame

the pottery pieces are probally spindle whords, if the hole is centered right. also yes, game pieces, sometimes jewlery. we get the same stuff over here. NM . usually the spindle whords are smoothed on the edges, but im sure how yours has been centered it probable. also, if game disks, they coulda drilled them to carry a bunch at once. you also got what apears to be a sandal fragment there. nice perishable :icon_thumleft:

Re: My "Ken" frame

if you dont want that sandal piece you can send it my way ;D

Talked to my son who said they were either Whorls or game pieces. I reckon they could have been used for both.

Re: My "Ken" frame

Thats a nice frame. I agree with Chong on the spindle whords. I have 1 & its broke.
Thanks for showing us..

Molly.

Re: My "Ken" frame

We find the same round items, some drilled and some not, on our Ft Ancient sites. The archys around here say the same thing, some could have been Spindle Whorls, some may have been Game Pieces, some may have been used as Jewelry, and some of the bigger undrilled one may have been caps or tops for jugs and jars.

Here's some of mine from southern Ohio.

Re: My "Ken" frame

please clarify something for me,

is it;
spindle whorl???
or
spindle whord???

and are they for?

thanks,
steve

Re: My "Ken" frame

If I understand correctly a spindle whorl is a small disc attached to a spindle( a round stick) to keep up momentum while fiber or hair is spun into thread.
Chong, you are welcome and in case I didn't tell you those bullets were found in the late 70s early 80s. Post away.
