I found this around an old home site. I let it soak in Evapo-rust for about a month and finally got the vast majority of the rust off. Does anyone have any clue as to what it might be? Thanks for looking.

I think it was a bug coffin.. :) was that a bug stuck to it in the before pic? I don't have an answer , but I like it. I love the old iron. Somebody shod have an answer for you, it certainly looks like it was made for a specific purpose . Good luck

Don't know, certainly interesting looking though. I'll be interested to know if/when you get an answer.

Nice find Rocky77! It sure looks like some kind of handle - a member will no doubt jump in with exactly what it is shortly. Looking forward to it being ID'd.

:laughing7: Could be a bug coffin, but one may never know. That was glass stuck to it. I have no idea how it got stuck in there. I did find some ol pottery shards near it, as well. I love the old iron stuff, too. I found it in what would have been the front yard of an old home. It wasn't too deep but I think it's kind of cool.

Is there possibly a hole at tbe wide end? They can hide very well under rust sometimes

Can you take a pic of the other side of it for us ?

There's no hole. It's the exact same as the side in the picture. I got all the rust off and did not see any hole. It looks like it might have attached to something.

AT first glance I'm thinking iron fence decoration...but then I took a better look and think this a handle for the old wood cook stoves with round plates that had a notch to stick handle in to open when hot to add more wood to stove so granny could cook bisquits. I miss those days...sorta.

I was thinking that too... Most have a lil curve to em. These are what I found

But that's not quite it, it appears to be a handle of some sort though . Don't go by what I say, I'm no expert

That's about the greatest guess I could think of. I was looking at some old stove pictures, but the house was built in the early 1920's so who knows. I got chased off by an angry raccoon last time I was there so I need to get back and explore some more.

Kind of close, definitely. I wish I was an expert. Seems like rusty old iron is always so hard to identify. Part of the fun, I guess.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It's probably an insignificant artifact, but I'd still love to know what this thing is.

No real answer to this yet, hmmmm. Maybe this will bump it up. Sometimes the answer is so obvious , but we don't see it . I feel like that should be the case with this .

could it be a mold ?
for what i do not know , but as deep as the depression is and even with all the age and rust it still looks like it was a crisp depression and not sloped edges .

I wish it was obvious. This thing probably isn't much of anything, but I sure would like to know. I'm off to the beach for four days to do some metal detecting. No computer....maybe I'll get some more insight by the time i get back. Thanks for your interest in this. I'd love to know what it is.

It is kind of shallow, but maybe some kind of mold. The edges are sharpky angled with the shallow depression in the middle. The mystery deepens!
