NICE! I haven't found a real gun yet. I bet the feeling is incredible. Congrat.
 

It's not a derringer, but I was thinking it might be a Marlin Model 1873 .22 Cal pocket revolver, or possibly a Smith and Wesson #2 revolver dating to 1865. Those were manufactured until 1875 I think, and were in both .22 and .32 caliber.
 

H & R  32 cal.JPG not an exact match , your pistol doesn't have the birds beak grip . It has the the spur trigger and I agree with the time line Bosnmate mentions a Smith and Wesson version , H & R made a knockoff version that is close to the frame style of your find . Could be S & W but ,, My guess is 1875 Harrington Richardson Defender .
I dug this one up in 2011.

Lol, I've been working with a bounty hunter 101 , for now .. I want to upgrade to a gold bug pro once I get the chance ~
 

if you put that plate in oxalic acid..it will take some of the rust off without eating the paint at all (works good on tin toys- beer cans - etc)
