I finally got it finished enough to take it for a test drive. I built it for large deep targets like a cache or meteorite. As I pushed it across the yard, I could hear lots of small targets go by. When I got to this spot I could tell it was a bunch of "little" targets in a small area. This thing doesn't see things as small as pulltabs and bits of wire. Here is what I found:

Yesterday I went out again, got a pretty solid hit. 4 hinges within a 5 foot area. It sounded like a single larger target.

Air test show a beer can at 2 feet and a top of a 55gal drum at 5 feet.

That is so cool and you even built it yourself?! AWESOME! and a dream come true...a detector that ignores pull tabs! lol

Yup, but it ignores gold rings, coins etc.

Cyn,
I notice you've been spending a lot of time on here, me too. I really should get something done...like more detecting

lol We do actually spend a lot of time on here.....on the bright side I am baking onion rolls and making homemade pasta at the same time ;)

That is cool. Trouble with big, deep targets - they are more work to dig up. :) Good luck on finding a cache.

I've been out a little today. I'm learning a lot.
How do you pinpoint with a 3 foot coil. :) I used some plastic bottle caps to mark the area. Then the Garrett to get closer and marked each target with a different cap. There is a line right down the middle of the square marked by the large coil. Maybe a piece of iron pipe. I'll spend some time digging the area. This will give me some feedback.

It will be interesting to find out if you are right about the line in the middle....it sure would make sense. Definitely fascinating seeing the new toy you made and how things are working out with it. Thanks for sharing the adventure with us.

Neat! So are you going to tell us the magic ingredients (detector not the onion rolls ;)) ? Is that pvc pipe for the coil? How'd you wire her up? If you won't tell I'll understand :(. Really cool idea!

I to would like to know how its built and what PI you are using.. Please keep it simple if you can,, ;D

This is Carl's design from Geotech. I just modified it a little for a large coil. He offers a bare circuit board for $10.

Yup, its all PVC with some lawnmower wheels. The coil is about 9 turns of some wire that I striped from a larger cable. Stuff that I had on hand.

Its powered by a 12v battery in my back pocket and homemade pasta ;)

Reminds me of the GPX4000 testing I did this weekend at a local park. Staked out some targets and got the Explorer and ran back over them to see if they could still be detected.

I gotta say I airtested a nickel at 24" with the stock coil... WOW! And NO ground noise either, wahoo!!!

Pretty cool project you got there, I predict you dig a Model T some time soon here....

I just saw something along these lines being pulled by a four wheeler for meteorites in Kansas. It was on the show "Cash and treasures", and they did, in fact, find two huge chunks of a meteorite. Great job on making your own!!!

hey Nashoba,
Thats how I got started in all this. It took a lot of research to find out how he did it. He found several pieces. He started out driving a 1986 minivan, now he drives a Hummer. The big one he found is valued at a million. I think he sold a basketball sized one for $80,000

His coil is 12 by 8 feet !!!!

Here is what was in the hole. And this is how it was layed out. I was pretty close with the big coil. Must be 30 lbs of iron. It was all between 8 and 9 inches deep. My regular detector could see it well. I made a big mess in the yard.

I was wondering if that's what you built it for. I saw a show, maybe it was the same guys. They built one and were finding huge meterorites. Worth big bucks. I think the show was "Best places to find cash and treasures" They pulled their detector on the back of a 4-wheeler?

Good job on the machine. Be sure to let us know when you find one!

Thats great how you built the detector. Good luck finding a cache.
