I wish I had a clue what this was. Found out in the woods in New England, a few old foundations in the area. Is it something cool like a piece of artillery or something lame like a piece of plumbing? beer bottle is for size reference. weighs about 30 lbs. Across the top reads "Magnus." The one slanted side reads "4 1/4 x8 MCB" and the other reads "NH OT B224" and the 'O' has a G in the middle of it. those tabs each have a letter inscribed in a little circle on each side, M, N, J, and C.

No idea but can't wait to find out what it is.I wonder if it is Railroad related.

You going to dig the rest of the train tomorrow!? HA...but anyway, judging from the blueprints that nhbenz provided, it appears almost 100 years old, and you would not guess from first looks, simply a testament of how they manufactured parts back in the day and the good quality of the metal used. Thx for sharing! great stuff..ddf

It's a bearing, most likely from a train. Any old RR tracks in the area?

Wow you guys are awesome, I even got blueprints thanks! makes perfect sense, there is a fenced off amtrak rail about 150 feet away and on the other side of that is an amtrak yard. my guess is before the rail was fenced off they had access to the woods on the other side and probably kept some old rusting parts piled up over there. This hobby certainly never gets boring! My dad loves trains and will love this as a gift, now he can have a piece of an old one. do you guys think this is worth anything, do people collect stuff like this? I think I'lll hit that spot again and see if there's anything else interesting out there

I did some research and journal bearings were discontinued in the 90's. from nhbenz's post it seems to be about WWI vintage. I have only found another photo of one of these online from. that was from another hunter but no pricing info. The metal covers on the outside of the bearing box go for about $100 apiece, there are a few of those online.

here's the one I found online, still magnus metal
