My grandfather was a coal miner in Olphant Pa and had some tales to tell.....

I can imagine allot of Coal was spilled off Trains & Canal Boats over 200 or so years.
& Water don't hurt coal. all coal is Wet down at the breakers before leaving on trucks, to cut down on Dust.
It only produces Sulfur if you add Wet coal to a Burning Coal stove before it dries.

As for The Dredges, I Do know During the Big Runaway 1770's, Many People threw Their
Guns in the Susquehanna to Keep them from the Indians . above and below sunbury. Then you Got Swimmers Losses, Flood Losses, Add to that the Susquehanna Was a Natural Landfill in the 1800's & Back

Lived in a coal mining area. Remember the old timers telling how they would climb on the rail cars and throw off coal while people on the ground picked it up for local use. They said they were always on the lookout for the railroad dicks as they were called in the day.

My uncles hauled coal and would stop at the house and shovel off a ton or so, so we could stay warm. I can remember getting up at 2 am when it was "my turn" to shovel coal in the furnace to keep it going.
