My great-great Uncle Moe's ring...

This has been passed down from generation to generation. It somehow ended up in my hands. I know that it is at least 130 years old. My great-great Uncle Moe was the original owner. He came was a Russian Jew and it was believed to be passed down shortly after immigrating through Ellis Island. I think it is a Ruby but not sure. I can take hi-res pictures if needed. Does anybody know anything about it. The ruby is pretty scratched up so I figure it doesn't hold much value but it is priceless to me.

Saw a ring someone had appraised that looked similar if memory remembers forty plus years ago correctly.
It was a garnet made by compressing garnet materials. Maybe production fragments from cutting /grinding.
Don't recall why when the owner was slightly dismayed it was not a solid cut garnet, the appraiser said the manufactured garnets did hold favor among some folks for it's quality.Perhaps lack of imperfection or something.
A neat heirloom you have regardless of what it's components are though..

Are you saying the ring is Russian? I don't think the hallmark is Russian. If it is old and Russian the hallmark for 14K would be '56'.

No, I don't know where the ring is from. He came from the Russia/Poland area before coming to the US. I really don't know anything else about him. They changed all of the Jewish names at Ellis island to be more pronunciable. Kind of makes looking for heritage difficult.
