Hi guys from New Zealand, my new garrett 1500 which i have used for maybe thirty hours total has found me some good militaria, which is what my passion is ..i hunt in mainly zero mode with all settings at factory default.
I seem to dig ten holes to one that produces, I am using the standard coil that came with it the 9.5"imaging coil, this is what I seem to strke...ping !!!off she goes and I then treasure image and see a target of say c size, depth say 9", I dig a plug and scatter the dirt around the hole, after I have dug about 12" with nothing showing I then scan the loose dirt ...nothing! check the hole ..zilch , !! then a lot of times I re do treasure imaging and see full notches at max depth and max detection signal, it shows to the left or off to the right, I end up digging around the perimeter with no results, or mostly no sound at all..it frustrates me I'll tell you..wondering wether its the detectors fault or something I need to understand more about !! would I be better to have a sniper coil for some areas ..would that help me..i would appreciate any thoughts on this as have no one down here to talk to about these things.........also there is a cheap second hand detector up for sale here called ..GOLD CENTURY GC1918...ANY GOOD GUYS OR JUNK? thanking you, des from down under..

Try turning your sensitivity down 4-5 notches. This function does not decrease depth, but allows the machine to function better with higher mineralized areas. The best operating level is the one where you can set the sensitivity to the highest possible setting without getting a lot of falsing, which it sounds to me that you are getting. Just out of curiosity.....did you get a model built during the last 2 years, as they had put in a new chip which will allow the machine to operate at a even higher mineralized area. If you are not sure.....write down the serial number and call Garrett.

Thank you John, I bought the detector six months ago direct from Detector Electronics Corparation in the states..I will look up serial number..
what about a smaller coil ? handy or dont need,! or maybe a propointer, would that help in these phantom holes ? ps ..John I :help: :help:do appreciate your knowledge thats for sure !!!

I have had the same experience with the GTI 1500 and it was caused by to high a sensitivity setting for the area. A smaller coil could help sometimes if you think you may have more than one target that is setting off the detector. Many times iron or minerals can be concentrated or produce a halo to make the detector think it is a more conductive target. Take note that sometimes a detector can sit on a dealers shelf for a while till it is sold so it is best to contact Garrett with the serial number to see if it has the new chip that John mentioned.

I understand the AAAAARRRRRRHHHHH!!!!! Too. :help:

Good Luck,
Sandman
