Virginia Beach
Detector(s) used
Excal 2 and E Trac
Hello,

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a solid week in Florida during Thanksgiving. Managed to get 2 beach hunts in as well as a land hunt! I am a bit late in posting, but hey, better late than never! :)

Monday I took my youngest brother(he is 15) down to Jacksonville beach. I have never been there, although I have been to Jacksonville almost every year since I was born to see family. We hit two different spots south of the Pier with decent results. This was his first time using a detector, and I let him use my Etrac for the occasion. He found a few things, but being new, I am sure he walked over a lot. All in all, targets were there, but not plentiful. He found 15 cents in 6 coins, and I found a bit more, but forgot to keep count. I also found an earring, belly ring, and a ring, but none of them are valuable.

Tuesday my mom set up for us to go to the Middleburg History Museum. The lady who runs the place is a very nice older lady, and after she told me some of the history of the building, I brought up my obsession, er, hobby :). She said I was welcome to hunt the grounds around the building! Wahoo! Funny thing is, I never made it there, because the next thing she said was, "You should come and hunt my house too. It is 98 years old." Turns out that the street she lives on is very old and historic, but it has been hunted before. There was a fort there long ago, and some people think the town is older than St Augustine. Despite the age, I did not find a lot in her yard or in the city park. I did do a fine job of trash removal however - that park was LOADED with trash.

Next time I head down south, I will definitely be in touch with her. I need to have my Etrac repaired, then Ill do a good hunt. I did find a few things in her yard, but nothing noteworthy except for one relic. It appeared to be a printing stamp of some kind for a shoe brand. Everything on it was written backwards, and it was very interesting. About 3 inches by 5 inches. I don't have a photo of it as I left everything I found there with her.

Saturday was the day we came home, but before that, I had the chance to visit St Augustine with my cousin, his fiance, his son, and his fiance's son. It was a very nice day at the beach indeed :).

I let him run the Etrac and I took the Excal. I gave them a demonstration on how to detect and off we went. Funny thing is, before I gave them the demonstration, I tossed my wedding band in the sand and used that. When I pulled my ring out, they all did a double take. It was picture worthy :). We decided that I would hunt with one little tyke, and my cousin would Hunt with the other, and off we went. I was amazed at how wide the wet sand area was. Must have been 200 feet from the high tide line to the waters edge. It took me 15-20 minutes to locate the target zone, and we were off!

My cousin didn't get into it as much as I do, but he found some coins with his son at least.

His fiance's son was captivated, and hunted with me for over 2 hours solid! Quite attentive for a 4 year old.

Along the way, we noticed something strange in the sand. Jury is still out on this one.

After a couple hours, it was time to go. I had places to be that evening, but I wish I could have stayed longer. The little guy and I found 2 quarters, 10 dimes, 1 nickle, and 20 pennies. We also found a Brinks padlock, a silver earring, and a Jennifer Lopez wristwatch that did not survive the water. And if you want to know exactly where we were hunting, well, look at the key silly :). The ring, small earring and butterfly belly ring were found at Jax beach, as well as most of the coins.

I left the coins with the little guys for their help, and kept the other items. All in all, the trip down was well enjoyed and my wife and I had a good time. Sorry there aren't more photos, we didn't take many at the other beach or land sites. She took a lot inside the home of the lady who let me hunt her yard, but there she was mostly photographing antique quilts. My wife is learning how to quilt, so they mean something to her :).

Thanks for reading,
Anthony

Wow, that is very cool to know. Is that the current peir, or the one that blew over a few years ago?

Anthony,

Thanks for sharing. Great story, plus good to hear about getting the tykes involved.

Probably was the highlight of their trip - looking for treasure on the beach.

The imprints in the sand look like they were made by horseshoe crabs.

Like always lot's of nice pictures.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks like a perfect holiday, get your little buddy interested and you will have a detecting partner for life
