My first "V" Nickel and "Mercury" dime (plus - some Indians and relics)

I hit my dependable spot both this morning and this afternoon and wasn't disappointed with the finds on either. This morning I managed to scare up a pair of Indians, old pair of keys, skeleton key and a nifty heart-shaped pin with a trolley and the words "Union Made" on it. I then found my first Mercury dime and a silver Roosevelt dime right after that. I was getting hungry so I decided to break for lunch.

Came back and found the "V" nickel in a spot I had already dug before and I must have missed it. (I wasn't using my large coil at that time. Live and learn I guess.) Another Indian head penny found it's way to my pocket as well as an old metal button (No idea of it's age - need to get a button book someday! ). The religious medallion I had to look up online as my Latin is rather rusty and it's a Saint Benedict Medallion. Found it about 8" down and I was surprised at the amount of fine detail on this medal. Sure has me wondering about it's age as I haven't seen anything like it made these days . I dug up a real old pair of scissors and a leg from a lamp or something - I have the scissors soaking in a chemical treatment as it is rusted solid. The metal tag was interesting. I looked up the name and found this person mentioned in the April 30th, 1905 edition of the Saint Paul Globe (cached online) as a druggist, on Selby and Victoria - just down the street from me here in Saint Paul, MN. The last item found was a key and chain with a 1978 elongated penny souvenir from the MN State fair.

Although I didn't manage to find any items from the 1800's I was happy to be digging up the coins and relics I have only dreamed of finding up to now. Hopefully I'll get lucky and run across some older pieces before the season is over.

That V nickel is one of the best condition dug V's I've seen! The hair detail on Miss Liberty is pretty outstanding considering that coin was probably in the ground for about a hundred years. Check and see if that rosie dime has a S mint mark. The 1949-S is the only rosie worth more than its face silver value. Excellent finds!

The button with the train is from a pair of Carhartt overalls.

Thanks for the ID on that button! I did read one site's description that said the heart-shaped trolley button overalls were from the early 1900's. That jives with the general date of the other items I found.

About the St. Benedict Medal

Here is some info on the medal:

On the front of the St. Benedict Medal

On the front of this medal, St. Benedict is hold the Book of Rules for Monasteries in his left hand and The Cross, the Christian's symbol of salvation, in his right hand.

Right below the Cross Benedict is holding, is the poisoned cup, shattered when he made the sign of the cross over it.

Right below the Book of Rules for Monasteries Benedict is holding, is a raven about to carry away a loaf of poisoned bread that a jealous enemy had sent to St. Benedict.

In VERY small type, above the cup and the raven are the Latin words:

C. S. P. B.
Crux S. Patris Benedicti
The Cross of our holy father Benedict.

On the outside rim of the medal, encircling the figure of Benedict, are the Latin words:

Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur!
May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death!

Eius in obitu nostro prae— on the Cross side

sentia muniamur!— on the Book of Rules for Monasteries side

Benedictines have always regarded St. Benedict as a special patron of a happy death. He himself died in the chapel at Montecassino while standing with his arms raised up to heaven, supported by the brothers of the monastery, shortly after St. Benedict had received Holy Communion.


In VERY small type below St. Benedict's feet we read:

ex SM Casino MDCCCLXXX —from holy Monte Cassino, 1880.

This is the medal struck to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of the birth of Saint Benedict.





On the reverse side of the St. Benedict Medal


On the back of the medal, the cross is dominant. On the arms of the cross are the initial letters of a rhythmic Latin prayer.

On the vertical portion of the Cross:

Crux sacra sit mihi lux!
May the holy cross be my light!

On the horizontal portion of the Cross:

Nunquam draco sit mihi dux!
May the dragon never be my guide!

(May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide!).

In the angles of the cross, the letters C S P B stand for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The cross of our holy father Benedict).

Above the cross is the word pax (peace), that has been a Benedictine motto for centuries.

On the outside rim of the back of the medal, the letters

On YOUR right side: V R S — N S M V
Vade retro Satana! (V R S) Nunquam suade mihi vana!(N S M V)
Begone Satan!(V R S) Never tempt me with your vanities! (N S M V)

On YOUR left side: S M Q L — I V B
Sunt mala quae libas. (S M Q L) Ipse venena bibas! (I V B)
What you offer me is evil. (S M Q L) Drink the poison yourself! (I V B)

Together: V R S N S M V S M Q L I V B

— a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan.


The Letters on the Medal

A number of letters arranged in various orders on the side on which the Cross is found remain to be explained. There is nothing hidden or superstitious about these letters; their significance is well known and approved by the Church. The manuscript of 1415 reveals their meaning and proves them to be the initials of Latin words which go to make up sentences explanatory of the object of the Medal and its use. They are in reality for the most part short prayers and imprecations, thought to have been frequently in the mouth of St. Benedict himself.

tuatara: Thank you for the information on this medallion. I was wondering if this might be an older one - and I haven't really found any good resources online to help me date it. All I could surmise is that due to the completeness of the inscriptions and amount of detail might make this an older piece. I did notice some tiny initials near the feet of the saint - "S. J." and these might be a clue to the artist who designed it? I'll continue to do some research in hopes of dating this.

I believe the medallion dates back to the 1880's - 1910's. But it's just a guesswork.
