Today I finally got to try my hand at competitive metal detecting at the Three Forks Treasure Hunters Club 30th National Open Hunt just west of Tulsa, OK. It took a bit of convincing by my hunting buddy to get met to go but I couldn't be much happier that I did. In fact I kind of wish I had joined in on more than just the Main Hunt.
As plainly stated the hunt goes on rain or shine. And true to form Mother Nature made use earn even the seeded silvers. The blowing wind and light rain made it feel much colder than it actually was, the field was muddy which just made the challenge that much more fun. All i knew is that my task was to gather as many silver dimes in one hour as possible before the horn blew signaling that time was up. Some of them were painted and had numbers on them which you later traded in for the coresponding prize, though in the mud and with a hard 1 hour time limit, I wasn't wasting any time looking at them.
In the end I wound up with 44 coins, 1 was a nickle which wasn't part of the hunt, but I couldn't just leave it. After the hunt was over I pulled out my fist full of dimes and started checking for the ones marked as prize tokens. I knew I had found a few but much to my surprise I had 11 prize tokens (painted dimes), and 32 silver dimes to take home.
I don't know if there's an official record but according to the reactions of the folks who've been doing this for years no one person has ever found that many of the prize tokens. I guess it was just my lucky day.
At the end of the 2 day event they raffled off one last detector and drew names for any prizes for which the token was not found. So I grabbed one of the promo item bags I had won since it I don't own any gear by that particular company and donated it back to the drawing pile so their could be at least one more winner.
I'm sure I could never duplicate the number of prize tokens I found but maybe next year I'll win one of those detectors.
A special Thank You to the all of great folks at Three Forks Treasure Hunters Club who hosted the event, I had a great time and really enjoyed meeting all of you.
