My first time.....What I found

I got my md for Christmas and Saturday I had the opportunity to use it. I went to my daddy-in-laws and searched around a bit on his land. I don't know much about it except for everybody always finds arrowheads there.
Mind you this was my VERY FIRST time using it. Here I go...beep beep. So I am trying to figure out where to start digging. My daddy in law comes and takes my md from me and starts beep beeping. And then he says I have one of these in the house. I resist the urge to say "Well then go get it!". I smile and stand there. Gosh I'm a good daughter in law! Anyway, my first beep beep was the rolly thing from a lighter (in the pic).
I was able to mosey away from the others so I could have little one on one time with my machine while they were shooting the guns. In between a coke can and two beers cans, I found the brass colored shell - 30.06? And then I found the cap to the 12 ga shell. My final find (before DH came and took the md *sigh*) was the white thing. I think it is some kind of lead shell. I heard shell, I heard musket. Anyway, it was mine and I found it! lol (read the beginning, they were shooting guns and I found beer cans? yeah, these are the people who were telling me what all I found).
Aside from figuring out that people must have been shooting out on the land for a long time, I had SO much fun!
Thanks for letting me share!

You are off to a great start. This sounds just like an early post from my pal Nana40. She had similar results when she first got going & now she one of the best on the net. Keep up the good work.

its a start and you now have proof that your mavchine does indeed work -- now keep practicing-- listen carefully not all beeps are equal --- listen closely differant sounds mean differant types of metal often times depending on the kinda machine your using--- Ivan

TT its a --- lighters "spark" wheel from a cheap throw away"bic" type lighter --- Ivan

I've found lots of these things and have never been able to determine what they are. Do you know? I'd sure like to know so I know what I'm throwing away. LOL

The "rolly things" are flint strikers off of a Bic Lighter. :D

You have a great start girl. Tell daddy in law to go get his own detector and leave you alone. Welcome to Tnet Cinde, any questions, just ask. Everyone here is more than willing to help you out. Happy Hunting

Crusader Team would call that a good start. We have twisted logic. Everytime we get off to a nothing or rubbish start we say 'Good start'. This is because if you were to get a silver coin straight away it would be the kiss of death. Now probability says that as you work through all the different types of rubbish (this hobbie should be called rubbish digging not treasure hunting) then soon enough the good stuff WILL follow.

Keep at it & the most important thing other than having fun is cover the land systematically. Like mowing a lawn, do it in strips & miss nothing out. Don't be tempted to wonder off as this will get poor results unless you are lucky. The idea is not to be lucky as this only plays a small part (no harm in thinking lucky - PMA), but to be methodical & consistant with your finds.

Keep Sensitivity as high as the land will allow without ground/mineral interference (say 8-9)

Keep Discrimination as low as possible

The above will allow you to get used to the difference sounds. You will soon learn what iron, foil etc is & ignore if you wish. Be careful ignoring as iffy signals often turn out to be gold rings etc. If you have time clear it all, iron may mask a gold coin.

HAPPY HUNTING & keep posting

Welcome to the hobby! It is truly enjoyable and I think you will find a lot of fun in doing it. My wife likes the fact that I dont hang around the house so much now, well now I do due to the snow. When spring comes I will be out there and I will be having a ball. Great finds and keep everyone posted on what you find in the future. ;D

Hi Cin,Glad to here of your great fortune in getting a detector.Tell that old fart to play with his own beep-beep.Lots of good stuff for a first timer. Those old coins will be popping out of the ground before you know it.
Happy Hunting,
Jim

All finds are good finds.... and pay heed to Crusader, his advice is priceless, and has got me finding better and better stuff by the week. ;D

WTG. Soon you will post nice stuff.I like your Avatar.

Good First Hunt

Keep it up. But, beware, it can be addicting--especially once you find your first piece of jewelry.
Nice pics.

like previously mentioned be systematic, and understand your md search coil creates an inverted cone so be sure to overlap your sweep with the searchcoil by half or one third of the length of the search coil. you'll miss less this way and get the deeper stuff too.

glad you enjoyed it and good hunting in 2008
