Hi everyone,

I am brand new to this forum and to MD - I love it so much. I've been having trouble pinpointing targets and would a lot of time end up digging a huge hole with nothing to show for it. I don't always understand why when I pinpoint it, then dig a giant hole, the signal will still chime as if it's right there, but just not able to find it.

Finally though, this weekend, I found a 1944 wheat penny AND an old thimble - the penny was in my backyard and the thimble was in Golden Gate Park - so I am thinking maybe it would be from the 1906 earthquake because why else would anyone be sewing in the park?

Just wanted to share my excitement and say hello to everyone!

I agree, having a pinpointer makes a huge difference. I used to get frustrated and fill the hole back in without finding out what I was digging for. Have not done that since getting my Pro Pointer! Congrats on the first and Welcome!

I am new to metal detecting, and have only been out for about 20-30 hours. Friends who have been doing this for a while, told me to get a Pin-Pointer, its the best money you will spend. I got a Garrett, and they were right, cant imagine I would have found half the stuff I have, just clad and odd & ends, but I am glad I got it

Oh yes, I have a pin pointer too - it's what helped me find my penny. I had found a little bit before that, but it was really hard sifting through every bit of dirt. It was just that I dug this huge hole, had to be 14" deep, and was scanning over with the garrett, and it was still telling me it was 8+ inches - so, I was really getting confused because my hole was already so deep, so I didn't know if it meant 8 more inches from the bottom of my hole. It was a really clear sounding bell too, but after about 30 minutes, I gave up and filled it back in.

I don't have a Garrett but when I first got my detector I couldn't pinpoint with it at all like I could with my old one. That's why it stood in the corner of my room for 3 years.
All I can tell you is practice practice practice. Eventually pinpointing became easy for me. Even with a 15 inch coil.
I think the hand held pinpointers are a wonderful thing. They've made me a faster detectorist. I also think they hinder the learning curve of pinpointing with your machine. I pinpoint with the very top of the coil. I back it off until the sound stops and go around in a circle.

It might have been a signal that was somewhere in the side of your hole, on edge. How wide was your hole? Also, it might have been something large buried even deeper.

Just practice pinpointing at home in your yard. You'll get it soon enough.

HH!

Not sure how many times I will need to say this on Tnet (but whilst there are new people I will repeat). Forget looking at the VDU & its depth & numbers. Keep digging & learning the sounds & what they tell you.
The more you dig the more your learn, this can take years, there is no quick answer, just stick at it, if you like it.

Lucky,
Welcome to Treasure Net !
If you have not ID-ed you thimble, you might try this thread--with a picture--especially of any hallmark(s).
